From the fall of 2018 onwards, I had the privilege to participate in the final stage of the
recovering and digitalization of the BH UCM 22, a partial codex of the Septuagint sent by the
Senate of Venice to Cardinal Cisneros in the first years of the sixteenth century, in order to help
the editorial tasks of the Polyglot Bible, sponsored by him and finished in 1517, even if only
put to sell in 1520. The remains of this codex, once believed to have been destroyed in Spanish
Civil War (1936-1939), are nowadays available in an open-access online edition. One of the
surprises of the new codex were the hundreds of corrections and text supplements performed
by Marcus Musurus, a well-known collaborator of Aldus and his house until 1516. Similar
interventions by him upon Biblical text are also found in fol. 2-25v of the Lond. BH Add.10968, where portions of books I and II of Kings are copied. This last codex, which must be somehow related to its Complutensian relative, has been proved to be one of the Aldine Bible’s Druckvolagen.
In my paper, I compare the text of books 1-2 of Kings and Musurus’ interventions upon it in
both codices, looking for the textual and palaeographic implications of a not so-common case
in Greek palaeography: that of a same text reviewed by a same scholar in two manuscripts. By
looking for Musurus’ manuscript sources for his revisions and the printed text of both the
Venetian and the Complutensian editions, the paper intends to contribute to the complex issue
of the Septuagint’s textual tradition.
Presented at the Text and Textuality 2021 online conference, 15-16 July 2021.
