If your CBP background check was delayed, you are NOT cooked — and in this video I explain exactly why. Most applicants panic when their BI goes quiet, but a delay is one of the most common parts of the federal hiring process. A background investigation does not move in a straight line; it moves in waves. When CBP labels your case as “delayed,” it usually means one of three things: they are waiting on outside agencies, they are verifying information from your SF-86, or your investigator needs additional time to close references, employment checks, or jurisdictional records.
A delay is NOT a denial and it is not an indicator of whether you will pass or fail adjudication. Most applicants experience some form of delay, especially if they’ve lived in multiple states, changed jobs frequently, served in the military, or have foreign contacts. Even something as simple as a slow response from a previous employer can pause the process.
The background check is designed to be thorough, not fast. CBP must confirm identity, employment history, integrity, criminal history, financial responsibility, and overall risk to the mission. That takes time. The key is understanding that “delayed” is an administrative label — not a judgment about your suitability.
In this video, I break down the real reasons delays happen, how investigators work behind the scenes, why adjudication often takes longer than applicants expect, and what signals actually matter. You’ll learn the difference between a delay, an issue, and a red flag, and how to stay calm and prepared while CBP completes your BI.
