In Astrophysics we can't put the galaxies we want to study in a lab and poke them with sticks to see how they react. They are not only prohibitively large, but they also evolve on the distinctly non-human timescale of hundreds of millions of years. This makes studying their formation and evolution near to impossible. To overcome these impossible odds we look out into the universe using telescopes such as the Hubble Space Telescope and the Very Large Telescope, but to see how these systems evolve in time we need something a bit different: computer simulations. We can then bring together these simulations and observations to get a fuller picture of the Universe around us.
This video shows the gas and dark matter at a single point in time from FLARES (the First Light And Reionisation Epoch Simulations). These simulations were run by researchers in the FLARE group at the University of Sussex's Physics and Astronomy department.
This suite of simulations consists of 40 of these spheres, each 30 Mpc across (nearly 100 million light-years). Each of these spheres contains thousands upon thousands of galaxies which we can analyse to better our understanding of galaxy formation and evolution.
