Easy Swarm Trap Setup Anyone Can Try!

Описание: Last year was only my second year as a beekeeper and I set up some bait hives (swarm traps) to try and catch some honey bee swarms. I used lemon grass oil and wax foundation with no success...pretty discouraging.

This year I decided to change things up. I discovered a product called Swarm Commander that was created by by Scott Derrick.

Scott was actually introduced to me via facebook by Travis Ulbrich, another beekeeper who has become a good friend. Believe it or not, I was actually looking for some bee repellant that worked but didn't smell bad and of course Scott also has a product called Honey-B-Gone. It is ironic that he has a product that bees cannot resist, but he also has a product that bees cannot stand!

Anyway, the package containing the Honey-B-Gone also had one little sample vial of Swarm Commander. I tried it out a few weeks ago and saw the immediate interest of bees. It seems that it has an incredibly powerful effect on them. They cannot resist. I ordered a squirt bottle of the stuff and have had good success with it. The first swarm I caught was in a small five frame box when one of the hives in my backyard swarmed. I was at work but my wife and daughter sent me some video. What an event that was! Within a two or three hours the bees left. I think the space was too small in the nuc box. Lesson learned! Since then I have caught 4 swarms. Another was at my house in a ten frame box, and then three were caught with the basically the same set up as is demonstrated in this video and at this same location. It is a good spot!

I wanted to post this video and show what has worked so well for me this year. I am no expert, but have enjoyed a little success.

I think the keys to my success are:

Place the trap near a known source of bees
Use a 7 to 10 frame box
Use at least one frame of drawn comb
Use Swarm Commander...it works!

I am thankful to Scott Derrick for producing such good products. It has been a lot of fun.

Video quality is not the greatest in parts of ths video due to cloudy weather and strange lighting, but I think you will enjoy the video anyway.
