In February 1964 The Shirelles released a single with "Sha La La," a song written by Bob Taylor and Bob Mosely. A few months earlier they had a single with "Don't Let It Happen To Us" on it, which had been recorded in March 1963 with Jack Nitzsche as arranger and on piano was Leon Russell. Manfred Mann (“Doo Wah Diddy”) had a Top Twenty hit with "Sha La La" near the end of 1964, which inspired the two covers here.
Russell played keyboards on both covers of "Sha La La" presented here. The first, by The Ventures, was recorded December 9, 1964 with Leon playing along with all four Ventures members (Mel Taylor, Noke Edwards, Don Wilson and Bob Bogle). During that afternoon session Leon did double duty as pianist and organist on "Sha La La" and The Ventures cover of The Zombies hit "She's Not There."
The second version of "Sha La La" here was recorded by Gary Lewis And The Playboys for the album Everybody Loves A Clown. That August 8, 1965 session was on a Sunday, and was also used for Gary's covers of The Everly Brothers hit "Til I Kissed You" and "We'll Work It Out," a song originally recorded in spring 1963 by Henrietta (of Henrietta and the Hairdooz). Leon was the arranger and session leader, bringing in Hal Blaine and Tommy Tripplehorn and Carl Radle (friends of Russell's from Tulsa) to play with Gary and his band.
