Slight horn malfunction! American Century made a late evening arrival to Duluth with a rather large crowd for the late hour present to see her. The captain tried to use the bow horn to salute, but something was off with it and while we could hear it from the pier, the captain standing inside a thousand feet back probably couldn’t. After a few tries, he switched to the stern horn, which worked much better. The lake crossing had been extremely smokey, so it’s possible that clogged it up. Either way it did work on their way out! The ship loaded up iron ore before departing the next day.
Built in 1981 as the final of five ships of her design, American Century measures 1,000ft (300m) long and regularly carries loads of 70,000 tons across the upper four Great Lakes. Designed and built as the flagship of the Columbia Transportation Company in the years after the loss of their previous flagship, Edmund Fitzgerald, she carried the name Columbia Star for much of her career. In 2006 she was bought by American Steamship Company and renamed following the bankruptcy of that company and has served as the American Century since. The ship has set several cargo records in her career, although her twin sister Indiana Harbor carries nearly all of those currently. The ship has had an amazingly incident free career, the only noted incident on record coming this year in April when one of the ship’s anchors was accidentally released inside the Soo Locks, delaying traffic for about 5 hours while crews inspected for damage (there was none).
Hope you enjoy!
