Segregation refers to the separation of individuals or groups based on characteristics such as race, ethnicity, religion, gender, or social class. This separation can occur legally, as in enforced segregation policies, or informally, through societal norms and practices. Historically, segregation has been used to enforce inequality, with marginalized groups often denied access to equal opportunities in education, housing, employment, and public facilities. A notable example is the racial segregation laws in the United States during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, commonly known as Jim Crow laws.
Segregation perpetuates social and economic disparities by limiting interactions between groups and reinforcing prejudices. While formal segregation has been abolished in many parts of the world, de facto segregation, resulting from systemic inequalities or socioeconomic factors, continues to persist. Addressing segregation requires policies that promote integration, equality, and inclusion to create more equitable societies.
