One of Auckland’s most influential King Cobra members, Ulaiasi Pulay-tea, known as “Rocky,” was laid to rest on Friday 5 September 2025. Hundreds of mourners, including bikers riding in convoy, gathered for his funeral, which began at Davis Funeral Services in Henderson and ended at Waikaraka Cemetery in Onehunga. Police monitored the procession, warning the public of delays.
Rocky, who died aged 57 after prolonged ill health, was remembered as a respected leader within the King Cobras and across rival gangs. His casket, marked “Chief Rocky, Lifetime Member,” was lowered as friends, family, and fellow gang members shared tributes, wore personalised clothing, and read Psalm 23:4.
Born in Tonga in 1968 and later moving to Auckland, Rocky rose to prominence in the 1990s as a senior gang leader. His criminal career included armed robberies, major drug importations, and running operations from prison using smuggled phones. He served long prison terms but remained a key figure in the underworld, even after being confined to a wheelchair following an accident in 2018.
Though defined by crime, Rocky was remembered for his generosity, loyalty, and influence, earning respect across communities and even making appearances at rallies in his later years. His passing drew widespread tributes, highlighting the complicated legacy he leaves behind as both a feared criminal and a respected leader.
