“Then we came forth to see again the stars: On Reading Dante and His Significance for Us”
Panelists: Guillermo Bleichmar, Alison Chapman, Michael Golluber, Walter Sterling, Sarah Stickney, and Paola Villa
Dante Alighieri completed his Commedia in 1320 and died in 1321. The 700th anniversaries of both, over two years, occasioned new editions and renewed attention to this foundational work of poetry, literature, philosophy, and theology. Here at the college we have had multiple study groups and lectures on Dante over the last several years. Dante’s work is one of the \ major engagements of the St. John’s Program and of the sophomore year, but it is also a consistently puzzling work, at turns beautiful and inviting, and yet dense and inscrutable. Our tutor panel will offer a series of short sketches and readings, ranging from “Dante the Heretic,” to the imagination’s role in astronomical observation and time keeping in the poem, to the description of the Gates of Hell, to comparisons of parallel cantos across parts of the comedy, and on to other themes. After the short presentations,
there will be refreshments and a question period. This occasion is offered in honor and memory of tutor Cary Stickney.
