After winning his first three races in New York, John Henry finished third, beaten a half-length, in his graded stakes debut, the Grade 3 Lamplighter Handicap on July 1, 1978 at Monmouth Park. He made a second attempt to win his first turf stakes on July 19, 1978 in Belmont Park's Hill Prince Handicap, but was denied by Darby Creek Road, who two starts back finished a well-beaten third to Affirmed and Alydar in the Belmont Stakes.
John Henry and Darby Creek Road showed speed and swapped positions at the top several times throughout the one-mile race. At the top of the stretch, John Henry took a narrow lead, but Darby Creek Road battled back along the inside and kicked clear to a 1 ½-length victory. It was John Henry's first loss in four starts in New York.
