How do you improve the efficiency of your Historic Windows?? Two options are Zinc or Spring Bronze weatherstripping. To discuss these options, I talked with Melanie from Glaze Craft Windows in Virginia.
Zinc Weatherstripping: The Good and the Bad.
Zinc weatherstripping is a durable and historically appropriate material used to improve energy efficiency in historic windows. It consists of thin strips of zinc that are installed in the meeting rails or jambs of a window to reduce air infiltration as shown in the video. Commonly found in double-hung windows, it helps create a tighter seal without altering the window’s original appearance. Zinc’s flexibility and longevity make it an ideal choice for maintaining functionality and preserving historic authenticity.
However, it has disadvantages. Installation can be complex, requiring precise fitting to avoid damaging the sash or frame. Over time, zinc can corrode in damp environments, reducing its effectiveness. Additionally, it may create resistance when opening or closing windows if not installed properly. Regular maintenance is essential to ensure smooth operation and long-term performance. You can find Zinc weatherstripping supplies at Killian Hardware and Trademark Hardware, to name a few (google both, they are online shops).
Spring Bronze: A Superior Alternative
A better alternative than Zinc might be Spring Bronze Weatherstripping. Spring bronze offers a tighter seal and easier installation, making your historic wood windows nearly airtight.
Check: www.springbronze.com or Killian Hardware for a number of options. There is also Window Restoration Supply who sells a number of types of Spring Bronze.
