In the 1980s, the US Air Force realized their nuclear silos were sitting ducks for Soviet satellites. Their solution? Put the missiles on wheels.
The Peacekeeper Rail Garrison was a plan to turn the American rail network into a giant shell game.
These "Doomsday Boxcars" were designed to carry the largest nuclear missile ever built—the LGM-118A Peacekeeper—inside what looked like an ordinary freight train.
The plan was simple but terrifying: blend in with commercial rail traffic, roam the country undetected, and if war started, stop and launch a 195,000-pound ICBM from the middle of nowhere in less than 15 minutes.
This is the story of the Ghost Trains that almost carried the apocalypse.
