Painting Crystals Using Salt

DAZZLING!

This is the first class in our Crystals painting series and it is a great way to start off.

I mean who doesn't love crystals?

In this watercolor tutorial, Caitie North of Peerless Watercolors shows you a new way she has learned to paint crystals.

This new technique includes the use of salt.

I love adding salt to my watercolor paintings pretty much anytime I can.

I know some people are not huge fans but hey, this video is not for them.

Salt amplifies the already chaotic and organic attributes of the watercolor medium.

That organic quality of watercolor is one of the reasons I love to paint with them.

Not only does it look cool but it is also a nice philosophical exercise also.

It's a tiny little exercise in allowing.

Allowing the paint to do what it wants a little and allowing yourself to be ok with that!

For me painting with any kind of watercolors is half "I almost know what I'm doing" and half "well I guess that just wanted to dry like that."

WHICH I LOVE!

You get to put in your input for 87% of the painting but the rest of that painting is up to the paint.

No two paintings will ever dry the same.

So adding the salt and watching it bloom and drag the paint around the page is a natural and welcomed addition for me.
