Costa Rica faces a pivotal presidential election on Sunday as rising crime and violence dominate the campaign, with abstention projected to reach 40 per cent. Conservative frontrunner Laura Fernandez proposes a state of emergency and controversial judicial reforms, whilst centrist Alvaro Ramos pledges more police and social spending, and third-placed Claudia Doble promises 8 percent of GDP for education. With nearly half of voters fearing democracy itself is at stake, opposition candidates hope to force a second round by preventing an outright win, which requires 40 per cent of the vote.
Al Jazeera's Julia Galiano reports from San Jose, Costa Rica.
