Guru Rinpoche (skt. Padmasambhava) embodies the essence of all Buddhas through time and space.
Padmasambhava was born in the 8th century as an emanation of Buddha Amitabha in Uddiyana in northwest Kashmir, as predicted by the historical Buddha Shakyamuni. According to legend, he was born as an 8-year-old boy in a lotus, evoked by a rainbow light that radiated from the mouth of Buddha Amitabha. King Indrabhuti accepted him as his foster son and named him Padmasambhava, the Lotus-Born.
In the year 750, Padmasambhava followed an invitation from the Tibetan king Trisong Detsen and helped him to establish the first monastery in Tibet, Samye. Padmasambhava used special abilities (Skt. siddhis) to overcome all difficulties with the local powers. Even the demons of the region promised him that from now on they would use their powers only to protect the lineage.
Padmasambhava spent more than 55 years in Tibet and passed his teachings on to 25 main students, one of whom was King Trison Detsen. The Tibetan princess Kharchen, who later became known as his consort Yeshe Tsogyal, was one of his female disciples as well as Padmasambhava's second main consort Mandarava.
For the benefit of future generations, Padmasambhava hid an immense number of teachings as termas (hidden treasures), which were discovered by Tertöns (treasure hunters) in the following centuries. After his death, Padmasambhava is said to been reborn in the Pure Land of the Glorious Copper–Coloured Mountain.
Padmasambhava brought the Vajrayana teachings to full bloom and it is primarily due to his activity that the Dharma became firmly established in Tibet. In the Nyingma lineage of Tibetan Buddhism, which he founded, he is seen as the second Buddha.
In the Himalayan countries, he is revered under the name Guru Rinpoche ("Precious Teacher“).
It is said that he manifested in many different forms during his lifetime. The best known are the eight manifestations of Padmasambhava, in each of which he expressed a particular enlightened activity for the benefit of beings.

His mantra is
ཨོཾ་ཨཱཿཧཱུྃ་བཛྲ་གུ་རུ་པདྨ་སིདྡྷི་ཧཱུྃ།
OM AH HUNG BENZA GURU PEMA SIDDHI HUNG
The wisdom mind of Guru Rinpoche and the essence of all Buddhas is manifested in the form of this mantra.
Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche said that the twelve syllables of the Guru Rinpoche mantra contain the entire blessing of the twelve types of teaching taught by the Buddha, which is the essence of his 84,000 dharmas.
Thus, reciting this mantra is equal to the blessing of recitation or practicing the entire teaching of the Buddha, and the accumulated merit is enormous.
