Reynold's Pentad is a set of five clinical criteria used to diagnose cholangitis, a potentially life-threatening infection of the bile ducts. The pentad includes:
1. Charcot's Triad (present in 50-70% of cases):
Abdominal pain (usually in the right upper quadrant)
Fever (usually high)
Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)
2. Additional two criteria:
Mental status changes (confusion, disorientation, or altered consciousness)
Hypotension (low blood pressure, typically less than 90 mmHg)
The presence of all five criteria confirms Reynold's Pentad, indicating severe cholangitis and a high risk of mortality if left untreated. Prompt recognition and treatment are crucial to prevent complications and improve outcomes.
Note: Not all patients with cholangitis will present with Reynold's Pentad. A high index of suspicion and further evaluation are necessary for accurate diagnosis.
