Dr. Dina El-Dakhs & Dr. Tahira Hoke | Reflection: A Key to Future Learning

Reflection refers to the conscious examination of past experiences, thoughts and ways of doing things. It aims to enrich our learning through bringing meaning to the experiences we go through. In reflection, the past is not over and done with. Instead, the past represents excellent materials to enhance our learning based on experiences that we went through. Reflection has several advantages, including increasing our awareness of our abilities and skills, improving our performance, informing our decisions and boosting the quality and implementation of our action plans.

In the current workshop, we will discuss the concept of reflection in light of learning for the future. This workshop will start with an overview of “reflection” in terms of definitions, advantages and applications. This will be followed by surveying a number of relevant theoretical frameworks, including the four F’s of active reviewing and the integrated reflective cycle. From completing course reports to progress reports, presenters will share examples of cultivating 21st-century skills and sustainably evaluating the quality of education. Finally, we will put reflection into action by focusing on Gibb’s reflective cycle. We will briefly coach the audience to use the cycle for their own learning from their personal and professional work experiences.

About Dr. Dina El-Dakhs
Dr. Dina El-Dakhs is the Chair of the Linguistics and Translation Department, Prince Sultan University. She is also the Director of the Applied Linguistics Research Lab. She has extensive experience in teaching and coordinating Applied Linguistics and TESOL programs. Her research interests are Second Language Learning and Teaching, Psycholinguistics, Discourse Analysis and Pragmatics. She has published in several flagship journals.

About Dr. Tahira Hoke
Dr. Tahira Hoke is the Aide to the President, Director of the Evaluation and Academic Accreditation, a Sustainability Fellow, and a faculty member for the College of Humanities and Science at Prince Sultan University (PSU) in Saudi Arabia. She is a member of the American Evaluation Association and her research interest includes motivation, sustainable evaluation, and trauma-informed pedagogy.
