On July 8th, 2025, Google pushed out an update to Pixel 6a and Pixel 6 devices that was supposed to help with battery overheating… but for a lot of people, it’s done the exact opposite. Ever since that update, tons of Pixel owners have been complaining about worse battery life, phones charging slower, some capping at 80%, and even a few refusing to charge at all.
Google says the change is part of their “Battery Performance Program,” which kicks in once your battery hits around 400 full charge cycles. In theory, it’s to protect the phone from overheating — in reality, it’s left a lot of people with devices that barely last a day.
They are offering free battery replacements or compensation if your phone is on their “impacted” list, but if you’re out of warranty or just don’t want to wait, you’ll have to replace it yourself.
In this video, I’m showing exactly how to swap out the battery in a Pixel 6a, so if your phone’s been acting up since the July update, you’ll know how to get it back to normal.
