Today we’re sewing the Freedom Hip Bag by Merge Patterns — one of my favorite practical makes! This little bag (aka fanny pack, belt bag, bum bag or crossbody) is perfect for hands-free adventures and makes such a great handmade gift. The dimensions of the bag: 14.5” bag width x 6.5” height x 3.5” depth; Total circumference (bag with strap) 38-50”.
In this step-by-step sewing tutorial, I’ll walk you through every part of the process — from cutting your fabric and adding zippers to finishing your straps and hardware. You’ll see all my favorite tricks to get a clean, professional look every time. I’m using fun vinyl from My Punk Broidery.

Materials:
● ½ yard exterior fabric
● ½ yard interior fabric
● 1 yard fusible interfacing (16” width)
● 14” main zipper (#4.5-5)
● 7” exterior bag front zipper (#4.5-5)
● 6 ½” exterior bag back zipper (#2-3)
● 5” interior pocket zipper (#2-3)
● Two 1 ¼” swivel hooks
● Two 1 ¼” d-rings
● One 1 ¼” strap slider
● ½” d-ring (optional)
● ¼” swivel hook (optional)
Main Fabric – Light weight canvas used in tutorial. Other options are quilt cotton and cork.
Lining - Any light to medium weight woven fabric such as quilting cotton and poplin.
Interfacing – Medium-heavy weight woven. “Plantational” heavyweight cotton used in tutorial.
Fusible fleece can be used instead for structure, but trim the seam allowance off fleece first
