十勝牧場は日本の農業の中心地、十勝平野の中心に位置している。
その歴史は古く創設は1910年。
種馬牧場として創設された。
Tokachi Ranch is located at the heart of Japan's agricultural center, the Tokachi Plain.
Its history is long, having been founded in 1910.
It was established as a stud farm.
毎年1月中旬から約1ヶ月間行われる。
馬追いは十勝の冬の風物詩ともいえる。
It takes place for about one month starting in mid-January each year.
The horse chase is a winter tradition in Tokachi.
馬たちは、夏の間は放牧地で過ごしている。
冬期間は厩舎などで飼育されているため運動不足を補うため行われている。
The horses spend the summer months grazing in pastures.
During the winter season, they are kept in stables and other facilities, so this activity is conducted to compensate for their lack of exercise.
まずは妊娠している雌馬の２群が走る。
最後に1歳になった雄の仔馬達が走る。
First, two groups of pregnant mares run.
Finally, the yearling colts run.
競走馬のようなスピード感はない。
しかし重さ１トンを超える重量馬が雪を蹴って一生懸命に走る姿は感銘的だ。
It lacks the speed of a racehorse.
Yet the sight of a heavy horse weighing over a ton kicking through the snow and running with all its might is truly impressive.
