The Global Vision Crisis: A Solvable Problem
Imagine a world where billions of people are unable to fully participate in life, simply because they cannot see clearly. Today, that is the reality for 2.7 billion people who lack access to something as simple as a pair of eyeglasses.
Good Vision Changes Everything
Good vision is life-changing. It helps children learn better in school, improves job opportunities for adults, and boosts overall well-being. For children, clear vision is essential - around 80% of classroom learning depends on it. Without the ability to see clearly, a child’s education and future opportunities are at risk.
For adults, being able to see well opens doors to better jobs, financial independence, and a better quality of life. Yet, one-third of the world’s population lives without these opportunities, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Lack of eye care services, high costs, and other barriers make the problem worse.
Addressing the Vision Care Crisis Head On
The OneSight EssilorLuxottica Foundation is an organization working to eliminate uncorrected poor vision within a generation. The Foundation’s target is ambitious - but achievable.
To realize its goal, the Foundation works across 4 impact areas:
1. Creating Permanent Access to Vision Care: It works with governments, charities, and partners to set up vision care services in communities that need them most.
2. Funding Subsidized and Free Services: Many people cannot afford even low-cost glasses. The Foundation ensures those in need receive subsidized or free services.
3. Innovating for Affordable Solutions: From low-cost glasses to new technologies like tele-refraction, the Foundation invests in tools that make eye care more accessible and affordable.
4. Advocacy and Awareness: Many people don’t realize how common and serious the vision crisis is. The Foundation drives global advocacy at the highest levels and educates people on the importance of good vision.
These efforts have already helped millions, but much more needs to be done.
Solving the vision crisis requires teamwork.
Governments can make vision care a priority in schools and health systems. Industry players can support these efforts through integrated partnerships. Individuals can spread the message about the importance of vision care among friends and family members.
The benefits of solving this issue go far beyond just helping individuals. For every dollar spent on vision care, there is a ripple effect - improving economies, communities, and lives across generations.
