The years of Reconstruction (1865-1877) saw a forgotten and unfinished revolution in the defeated South after the U.S. Civil War. For a brief period, African American men voted, held office, and the freed people experienced sweeping changes in their lives. White southerners used violence, terror, and political chicanery to reverse these reforms and Americans continue to struggle today with the vexing problems first confronted in the postwar period. Professor Brett Barker will provide a glimpse into this forgotten drama in the American past.
This program was original presented live on October 12, 2024, at the Woodson History Center in Wausau, Wisconsin. History Speaks is the monthly lecture series of the Marathon County Historical Society, in conjunction with the Marathon County Public Library. The program is sponsored by Janke Book Store and the generosity of our members.
