🌿 The Divine Story of Brajrajpur

The Brajarajpur Shyamsundar Jiu Temple is not just a place of worship; it’s a living chronicle of divine love and faith. The temple’s origin is deeply connected to Mathurananda Das Goswami, the founder of the Goswami lineage in this region.
Among his descendants was a young girl named Premlata Goswami, blessed with beauty, purity, and unshakable devotion to Lord Shyamsundar.

One afternoon, while playing with her friends near the temple, a mysterious dark-hued boy joined their games. That boy, radiant and divine, suggested they play the roles of Krishna and Radha — he became Krishna, and Premlata took the role of Radhika. Later that day, they enjoyed milk and flattened rice (dudh-chire) served lovingly by Premlata’s mother.

That very night, Lord Shyamsundar appeared in her mother’s dream, asking her to continue offering dudh-chire bhog every noon — a tradition that continues even today.

💫 From Devotion to Divinity: The Story of Lalita Devi

Days later, Premlata mysteriously disappeared. Her grieving mother searched everywhere until the temple priest discovered her sitting peacefully beside Lord Shyamsundar’s throne.
When her mother, overwhelmed by emotion, struck her gently in confusion, Premlata left her mortal body in that instant.

In a divine vision, Lord Shyamsundar commanded that a neem-wood idol would arrive from Khhatra Raja Harishchandra Dhol, into which Premlata’s spirit would enter. That sacred image was then installed beside Lord Shyamsundar and named Lalita Devi.

From that day on, Lalita Devi has been worshipped alongside Lord Shyamsundar — a living embodiment of eternal devotion and love.

👑 Royal Legacy and Gaudiya Vaishnav Connection

The history of Brajarajpur is intricately linked to the Dhalbhum Kingdom. King Jagannath Dhol, once childless, received a boon for a son through the blessings of Lord Shyamsundar, as foretold by Mathurananda Goswami.
In gratitude, the king dedicated a portion of his kingdom — one part of Dhalbhum’s land — exclusively for the service and maintenance of Lord Shyamsundar’s temple.

It was through Mathurananda Goswami’s guidance that Gaudiya Vaishnavism took root in this region, making Brajrajpur a sacred Vaishnava center even today.

🌸 Unique Traditions: Madhyam Dol Festival

Unlike other temples, Brajrajpur celebrates Doljatra (Holi) on the day after Vrindavan and Nabadwip — known locally as Madhyam Dol.
During this grand festival, the idols of Lord Shyamsundar, Radhika, and Lalita Devi are taken out in a spectacular procession accompanied by Harinaam Sankirtan and traditional music.

Following an age-old royal custom, the palanquin (palki) used for the deities is still carried by the Tantubai community from the neighboring village of Tentulia, as decreed by the kings of Khhatra centuries ago. The temple priests continue to honor this tradition by formally inviting them each year.

Since Lalita Devi is considered the spiritual manifestation of Premlata, daughter of the Goswami family, the temple priests regard Lord Shyamsundar as their divine son-in-law.
Every year, during Jamai Bandhna (Son-in-law Festival), Lord Shyamsundar is offered new garments and special offerings — a rare ritual that symbolizes divine kinship between the devotees and their beloved Lord.
