The United States carried out a large-scale retaliatory strike against ISIS in central Syria, hitting more than 70 targets with fighter jets, helicopters, artillery, and precision-guided munitions after an ISIS-linked attack in Palmyra killed two U.S. soldiers and a civilian interpreter. Backed by Jordanian air support, the operation targeted ISIS fighters, weapons depots, training camps and logistics hubs, with President Donald Trump warning that any attack on Americans would be met with overwhelming force. Although ISIS lost its territorial “caliphate” in 2019 and its leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was killed, the group has survived by shifting into an insurgent model, operating in small cells from remote desert areas, maintaining a strong online propaganda presence, and carrying out ambushes and bombings. With an estimated 5,000–7,000 fighters still active across Syria and Iraq, and amid continued instability following Syria’s political transition, Washington sees the strikes as both punishment and deterrence, underscoring that the fight against ISIS is far from over.
