STORYLINE
The presidential election campaign got underway in Senegal on Sunday, ahead of the country's controversial vote on 25 February.
Abdoulaye Wade, the Senegalese President and leader of the Senegalese Democratic Party chose to start his campaign for re-election in the town of Mback, 180 kilometres (111 miles) east of the capital Dakar.
Some 10-thousand supporters, carrying banners and posters bearing Wade's image marched and cheered along Mback's street.
During the campaign rally, Wade tried to encourage younger people to vote for him by turning his attention to education.
"Education in Senegal is very important. There is a difference in education in developed countries and developing countries," Wade said.
Elsewhere in Dakar on Sunday, Senegal's opposition party headed by Mostafa Niasse held its first rally.
Supporters of Niasse and his party, the Alliance and Force and Progress Party (AFP) gathered in the streets of Dakar to cheer and wave banners.
During the rally, Niasse addressed his supporters and said his victory would "ensure against the regression, against the squandering and against the loss of values."
Four decades of Socialist Party rule ended in 2000 when Abdoulaye Wade came to power.
On 27 January, an opposition demonstration turned violent when riot police fired tear gas at protesters and detained the head of one of the main opposition parties.
An opposition rally last Friday was cancelled amid fears of more clashes.
Opposition leaders have a long list of complaints, including that parliamentary elections have twice been postponed.
