Purvottonasana or Eastern Stretching Pose is an important pose in the Primary Series because it is one of a just a few backbends in the series and it’s a Plank variation. The backend aspect requires shoulder and back flexibility whereas the Plank aspect requires arm and core strength. Also you want to learn engage and strengthen the long chain of muscles along the entire backside of your body. You can improve your pose by working to develop flexibility and strength at the same time and to do this it is helpful to go beyond doing the pose for just five breaths per day. Here I offer four exercises to help you explore the pose. Give them a go see if you can use movement, rhythm as you execute “mini vinyasas” and learn to embrace the idea of developing strength and flexibility together as you do a pose. Enjoy!
