The video explains the "climbing restart" skill, which is how to start riding again after stopping on a climb.
How to Perform a Climbing Restart:
Lock your brakes so you do not accidentally roll backward.
Put your foot in a powerful position, towards the top of the pedal stroke.
Stand on that pedal to create power, release the brakes, and then ride away.
Progressions for Coaches:
Ensure riders can perform the restart using either their right or left foot, as trail situations may require starting with one foot or the other. Practice with both feet before going out on the trail.
Increase the steepness of the grade to make it slightly harder.
Introduce a scenario where the slope is too steep to restart; riders should turn their bike to traverse across the slope momentarily. Once both feet are on the pedals, they can turn uphill to conquer the steep terrain.
Common Errors to Watch For:
Not locking the brakes: This can cause the bike to move around, leading to loss of balance or rolling backward.
Poor power position: If the pedal is not high enough in the power position, the push will not be strong enough, which may cause the rider to fail.
Incorrect gear selection:
If the gear is too easy, the powerful initial pedal stroke will be too short and weak to propel the rider forward.
If the gear is too hard, the rider will struggle to overcome gravity while restarting. The speaker suggests it is acceptable for riders to get off their bikes, switch gears, and pedal the cranks a couple of times to get to a better starting gear before getting back on and trying again.
