Kashmiris have been demonstrating in Srinagar in protest at the Indian army role in the general elections. Tens of thousands of additional army and paramilitary troops have been deployed in Kashmir to prevent attacks during the first elections in the state since the Muslim insurgency began in 1989. Muslim groups have urged voters to boycott the elections. Srinagar and other towns in the Kashmir Valley, have been paralysed by a general strike, which entered its fourth day on Thursday (23/5).
