Melida Rodas was chosen to read her poem, "THERE IN A CITY, Our JERSEY CITY," at the inaugural ceremony of Mayor Steven M. Fulop July 1, 2013. Melida graduated this spring (May, 2013) with a BFA from the Art Department and has also been an outstanding student in the English Department. She immigrated to NJ from Guatemala as a child with her family, and came to NJCU in the late 1990s, where she was an outstanding student in creative writing and memoir classes, mentored by Professor Edvige Giunta. NJCU has already taken great pride in Melida Rodas's accomplishments when her writing was included in anthologies from such publishers as Oxford University Press and Pearson, where it appeared next to works by such authors as James Joyce, Jamaica Kincaid, and Martin Espada. Students all over the country have read her "El Olor de Cansansio (The Smell of Fatigue)" and have learned from it that the lives of their own families are worthy of entering into writing and literature. She took some years off to raise her daughter, and returned to NJCU to produce her extraordinary BFA show, "Elefante," an extended mixed media exhibit combining ceramics and writing.
