I was fully food-coma mode… and ended up thinking about myths, creativity,
how humans keep telling the same stories across the world.
This comes from a visit to the Ethnology Museum in Hanoi — one of those places you might skip if you’re tired, hungry, or convinced museums are boring.
But this one got me thinking in unexpected ways.
What I love about history and ethnology museums is that they quietly remind you of two things at the same time:
we’re incredibly creative… and also not that original.
Across cultures, people explain the world in surprisingly similar ways — through rituals, symbols, animal spirits, stories about creation, and ways of connecting the human world with something bigger than it. Different names, different shapes, same questions.
Seeing how different ethnic groups preserve their traditions, rituals, and ways of life also made me think about how we define “normal,” “modern,” or “important.”
Just because something isn’t mainstream doesn’t mean it’s outdated or useless — sometimes it’s just telling a different story.
It’s is a gentle reminder that:
– traveling can stretch how you think
– museums can spark ideas (even when you’re tired)
– and learning about others usually teaches you something about yourself too
If you ever wondered whether it’s worth stopping at a museum while traveling — especially one you didn’t plan for — this one’s for you.
