Adagio in B minor, K. 540
–dedicated to–
Bill Finizio
In contemplating Mozart’s enormous output of operatic, orchestral and instrumental works, it is striking to note that relatively few are in a minor key. It is commonly agreed that such works, cast in minor, are among Mozart’s most profound utterances. In my opinion, while this Adagio captures universal grief, it ends with a wistful smile in a major key, as if to say, “No matter what befalls us, we must celebrate life.”
Now in my twilight years, I am blessed to have my dear friend Bill Finizio in my life. He takes care of all my needs while pursuing the development of his own profound music gifts. What better way to thank him than to dedicate this performance to him with gratitude and love.

Dedicated to
Bill Finizio
Because everyone’s opinion concerning music is so varied, it is not possible, therefore, to categorize any composer’s work as his or hers most profound composition. But if this were possible, then perhaps Mozart’s Adagio in B minor would deserve to be so thought of.
I have wanted to record it for years, but kept putting it off. Why? Even to this day, I have no idea how to interpret the slurs—not even the first one. So in making this recording, I decided to remain neutral and spontaneously allow the music to tell me what it wants to say. The result was exactly what I had predicted: the final interpretation was remarkably different from the conclusions I reached during my practice sessions. If I were to perform it in years to come, I am sure the interpretation will be transformed once again.
This performance is dedicated to my dear friend Bill Finizio. He has watched over me for years and has encouraged and advised me about musical and personal concerns. Much as we love to be together, we also flourish in seclusion, which we know is necessary for our work. During such periods of isolation, Bill is a model of discipline in developing his formidable musical gifts. I am more grateful to him then I can express for his willingness to suspend his own work to answer my needs. His gifts of time to me defines his generous nature. My thanks to him is woven into every phrase of this extraordinary work.
