Chapter 2: Lost for 100 Years… then found
Gilbert’s Potoroo had not been recorded since the 1870s and had been believed to be extinct since 1909 when it suddenly reappeared at Two Peoples Bay in 1994. Gilbert's Potoroo Action Group’s now Deputy Chair, Leigh Whisson, was working at Two Peoples Bay at the time and was only the third person (after then PhD student Elizabeth Sinclair and her volunteer Adrian Wayne) to see the newly captured animal - and to help with the first preliminary steps to try to identify it…
The rediscovery sent shockwaves of excitement through the conservation community. How could such a relatively large animal (adults weigh between 700-1000g, about the size of a rabbit) have stayed hidden in such an intensively researched Nature Reserve? Much has happened in the nearly 31 years since the rediscovery but despite many ups and downs, and a lot of hard work by a lot of committed people, the species is thankfully still hanging on…
Gilbert’s Potoroo is the rarest marsupial on the planet surviving only in a hidden corner of Western Australia. This is their story.
