What was the long year of revolution? And what did Americans debate during that period? Mary Beth Norton, professor emerita of American history at Cornell University and a summer resident of West Tisbury, joins a virtual conversation to discuss her new book, 1774: The Long Year of Revolution, with senior editor and Vice President at Alfred A. Knopf, Victoria Wilson. Wilson is a one-time resident of Vineyard Haven and West Tisbury and a regular summer visitor. The women discuss why Norton concluded that the events of 1774 were crucial in the coming of the Revolution; why she deals with all the colonies, not just Massachusetts; and how and why her narrative of those events differs from other historians’ descriptions.
Originally presented as a virtual program on September 3, 2020.
