STORYLINE:
Peru began the latest stage of its COVID-19 vaccination campaign on Monday, offering a second booster dose, the fourth in entirety, to its healthcare workers.
The aim is to reduce the risk of COVID-19 exposure and infection of healthcare professionals since their work puts them in direct contact with patients.
María Martínez, Executive Director of Immunizations of the Ministry of Health, said the fourth dose will also be for those who are over the age of 70 as well as people whose immune system has been compromised.
"Remember that to receive a fourth dose, one must allow five months to pass after the third dose," she said Monday during a campaign in Peru's capital.
The vaccination of this population in Lima will continue through April 13th at the various vaccination centers in the metropolitan area.
Peru has had more than 3.5 million cases of coronavirus infections, with 212,486 deaths related to COVID-19, according to Johns Hopkins University's tally of cases worldwide.
