STORYLINE:

Leaders of the Group of Eight industrialised nations arrived on Wednesday at the tightly secured Gleneagles Hotel in Scotland for the G8 summit.

British Prime Minister Tony Blair, whose government chairs the G8 this year, arrived early in Britain from Singapore where he had successfully lobbied for London's 2012 Olympic bid.

Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin has said he will do what he can to persuade US President George W. Bush of the need to tackle climate change.

Martin has been criticised by Live 8 organiser Bob Geldof for not being more generous with his contributions to Africa.

Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi flew from Tokyo. Japan last week pledged 5 (b) billion US dollars (euro4.21 billion) in aid to Africa over the next five years.

Koizumi is also expected to push for North Korean disarmament and make the case for a permanent Japanese seat on the U-N Security Council.

German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder has said that the Group of Eight summit must heed calls from last weekend's Live 8 concerts to give more help to Africa.

He also called for leaders of the world's leading industrial powers to send a signal to calm oil markets.

US President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush arrived in Prestwick, Scotland ahead of the G8 summit. Bush wouldn't comment on the G8 but he congratulated London on their successful Olympic bid.

Blair has challenged G8 countries to double aid to Africa to 50 (b) billion US dollars by 2010, and increase giving for all foreign aid to the equivalent of 0.7 percent of national incomes by 2015.

Bush announced last Thursday that he would seek to double U.S. aid by 2010 to 8.6 (b) billion US dollars from 4.3 (b) billion US dollars in 2004.

Bush opposes the 0.7 percent target.

Anti-poverty activists said that Bush's goal fell short of what was needed from the United States to meet Blair's target.

Bush, stopping in Denmark on the way to Scotland, warned he would emphasise the need for African nations to commit to good governance in order to get increased support.

On global warming U-S officials lobbied to prevent the inclusion in the G8 communique of any specific reduction targets as called for in the 1997 Kyoto Protocol.
