Food adulteration in India has become a significant and widespread public health crisis, in some cases it includes intentional addition of harmful non food grade substances to common food items for economic gain. common adulterated foods are milk and milk products, spices, edible oil and ghee, fruits and vegetables, honey and many more. Adulterants used in these are urea, detergents, brick powder, sawdust, mineral oil, vanaspati, calcium carbide, sugar syrup and so on.
The health consequences are often irreversible which includes stomach infections, liver and kidney damage, hormonal imbalance and increased risk of cancer.
The primary regulatory body in India is the FSSAI (Foos Safety and Saltandards Authority of India) operationg under the Food Safety and Standards Act.2006. It sets standards and conducts inspections and enforces penalties for violations.
