A quiet walk with Richard at Asilomar State Beach, Pacific Grove (CA) turned into an unexpected wildlife rescue. We spotted a sea lion in distress—lethargic, labored breathing, and not responding normally—so we kept our distance, called it in, and waited. Huge thanks to the Marine Mammal Rescue team who arrived quickly, assessed the animal, and safely transported him for care. Sharing this in hopes it helps more people know what to do when they encounter a marine mammal that needs help.

What To Do If You See a Marine Mammal in Trouble
👉Keep your distance (at least 50–100 ft / 15–30 m; more if it’s active or stressed)
👉Leash pets and give the animal space
👉Do not feed, touch, or pour water on it
👉Call your local Marine Mammal Rescue hotline (search “marine mammal stranding + your area”) and follow their instructions
UPDATE: The Marine Mammal Rescue has a list of all their past and current patients. They logged this sea lion and he was named "Pavement". He was a "subadult" and weighed 62.00 kgs. Sadly, only 2 days after they picked him up, he was marked as deceased.
🦭😭🙏
Rest in peace little sea lion.
