In 1979, Carroll co-founded the band Glass Animals with Liz Naylor. The group was later renamed Gay Animals before disbanding in 1984. During this period, she also co-edited the fanzine City Fun, which covered culture in Manchester in the early 1980s. Additionally, she wrote for publications such as NME (under the pseudonym Myrna Minkoff), City Limits, San Francisco Weekly, and Time Out New York.

Following the dissolution of Gay Animals, Carroll formed the indie band Miaow in 1984, serving as lead vocalist and guitarist. Miaow released their debut single, "Belle Vue," in 1985 and gained further recognition with the single "When It All Comes Down," released on Factory Records in 1987. The band was active until 1988, after which Carroll pursued a solo career.

"Moves Like You" is a track from Carroll's debut solo album, England Made Me, released in 1991 by Factory Records. The album was recorded at various studios, including Fon Studios in Sheffield, Cardan Studios in São Paulo, Blackwing Studios in London, and the Chicago Recording Company. The production featured contributions from Mark Brydon, who would later form Moloko with Róisín Murphy. "Moves Like You" itself was co-written with Sam Lister.

The single "Moves Like You" was released in multiple formats, including 7-inch, 12-inch, cassette, and CD.

The 12-inch version was remixed by Martyn Phillips, a producer known for his work on hit albums and singles for Jesus Jones, Erasure, The Beloved, and Londonbeat around the same time.

Despite critical acclaim, "Moves Like You" did not achieve significant commercial success and did not make the top 40. However, it was a much-loved track in indie circles, particularly around Manchester. Factory Records included it on FAC305C A Factory Sampler, a free tape given away with Select Magazine in March 1991.

Beyond her music career, Carroll has authored critical discographies, including works on Tom Waits and Fleetwood Mac's Rumours. Around the time of the release of "Moves Like You," Carroll relocated from Manchester to Chicago, where she has lived since.
