Paul McGann, India Fisher and an audience of Doctor Who fans star in the live recording of Big Finish’s first onstage audio drama, The Stuff of Legend, available now.

Back in September 2024, Big Finish listeners headed to London’s Cadogan Hall to see the live onstage performance of The Stuff of Legend. This brand-new Doctor Who adventure was an important part of the celebrations marking 25 years of audio adventures in time and space.

The story, written by Robert Valentine, features the Eighth Doctor (Paul McGann) and his plucky companion Charley Pollard (India Fisher) arriving in 1963 in a seemingly quiet Cornish town.

But wherever the Doctor goes, things never stay peaceful for long – the time travellers soon find themselves dealing not only with tales of mythical creatures, but also with two of their most persistent enemies, the Daleks (Nicholas Briggs) and the Master (Alex Macqueen).

The stage show also featured live foley effects and audience participation, with the audience providing voices for the Daleks’ Robomen. The recording of this rare and exciting event, complete with brand-new behind-the scenes extras, is now available to own.

Something is afoot in the lonely Cornish village of Merrymaid Bay. Rumours of dead men working in the tin mines have sent a chill through the community, and it's up to the Doctor and Charley to get to the bottom of the mystery.

Can the legends of the Bucca that haunts the mines be true? And just what awesome power do the Doctor’s greatest enemies – the Daleks! – threaten to unleash upon the universe?

Also among the cast of The Stuff of Legend – The Live Show are Carolyn Seymour as Old Emily and the Light Bucca, Nisha Nayar as Emily Barnfather, Jason Forbes as Captain Montgomerie Césaire, Barnaby Edwards as Jago Penrose and Foley, and Gabriel Clark as Jory, Robomen and the Dark Bucca.

Paul McGann said: “I've been involved in Doctor Who since 1996, but I’ve been on screen under two hours. That's insane, isn't it, when you think? So really, the Eighth Doctor lives primarily on the audios. That's where he belongs. So, this is right and fitting, isn't it?

“And long may it continue. Because, famously, the great advantage of Doctor Who is that they can pretty much go anywhere with it – they can go sideways or backwards, pair this one with that one, and take this out and try this live – and people will go with it.”

India Fisher added: “I'd never have guessed that when I got that job – when I was 24, and Jason Haigh-Ellery saw my show in Edinburgh and gave me his card – that I’d still be playing Charley Pollard when I’m 50… It's not something that many actors get the chance to do, and I feel very privileged.

“I love Charley, she’s a brilliant character and it’s really nice playing her to a live audience – it came alive! It felt really special, like performing for family. Paul is such an extraordinary actor, and to be standing next to him on a wonderful stage like Cadogan Hall, it was a blast.”

And Alex Macqueen agreed: “It was a great experience. It was absolutely packed. I was taken aback by how full it was – the sides were full, the main body was full, the back end was full. It was quite intimidating at first, but it went very well – there was such a warm response and lots of good reactions.”
