On January 21, 2023, the 17th Youth Parliament Pakistan® passed a bill to restore student unions and a resolution saying that democracy had failed Pakistanis. The 17th Youth Parliament Pakistan®’s young leaders agreed to give students a say in their schools’ decisions and encourage political involvement. The measure, called a "game-changer" for Pakistani education and leadership, would allow students to influence their destiny and build a more equal and just society. The Sindh Students’ Union Act, 2022 influenced the SU Bill, which was amended by YPP at Islamabad. They also voted a bold Declaration proclaiming democracy in Pakistan has failed. The motion asks for a review of the country’s democratic system and attempts to represent the people in governance.
At the morning session, participants had a frank conversation with Election Commission of Pakistan officials on Pakistan’s chances for a free and fair election, youth’s role in democracy, and measures to enhance youth voter turnout. The conversation addressed Pakistani young voter participation issues and solutions. Voter registration, awareness, political money, and election technology were discussed. The discourse with the Election Commission helps young people understand the election process, the ECP’s function, and how to have their opinions heard in government. The Election Commission of Pakistan pledged to collaborate with young and include their opinions while planning future elections. Ms. Nighat Siddique, Assistant Director General-Gender Affairs, Mr. Adnan Sakhawat, Deputy Director-Training, Mr. Naveed ur Rehman, Deputy Director-Local Government, and Mr. Ibrar Jatoi, Deputy Director-Elections, attended the ECP debate.
At the afternoon session, members of 17th Youth Parliament Pakistan® discussed Pakistan’s economic crisis with a panel of specialists, including Mr. Zafar Masud, CEO & President, Bank of Punjab, and Dr. Ali Salman, Executive Director of Policy Research Institute of Market Economy (PRIME). The panel examined Pakistan’s economic issues with young MPs and offered remedies. The nation’s young leaders asked the panel about inflation, unemployment, entrepreneurship, and the government’s involvement in the economic crisis, which was instructive. That wasn’t all bad. The panel also saw economic growth and progress ahead.
Panelists commended young MPs’ interest, intellect, and participation. They commended their efforts to find answers, empower themselves, and learn the skills they need to create Pakistan’s future.
The Secretariat, 17th Youth Parliament Pakistan Members, and PILDAT expressed gratitude to the partners for supporting the YPP. YPP would not have reached such heights and made such an impact without their constant support. YPP thanked them for their financial assistance, which enabled it to arrange debates, dialogues, and online sessions where young leaders shared their perspectives and ideas with top thinkers, business executives, and politicians from varied backgrounds.
