The movie reflects Hinduism during Chola Dynasty and depicts the king as a Hindu ruler. However, filmmaker Vetrimaaran questioned the depiction of Hinduism in the movie and claimed it to be inapt. He said that Hinduism did not exist during the time of Cholas. He is also supported by DMK and Kamal Haasan who accused the filmmakers of saffronizing the Cholas. Discussing this, BJP Spokesperson Khushbu Sundar said, “The minute you say that Raja Raja Chola was a Shiv Bhakt, you basically mean that he was a Hindu.”
