The Anthropology of Adornment and Identity at Somerset Place

Описание: Somerset Place hosted its first-ever virtual event on February 19, 2022. The lecture, “The Anthropology of Adornment and Identity at Somerset Place,” was held in commemoration of Black History Month. Kiana Fekette presented her research about a collection of personal adornments recovered from the former enslaved community through archaeological excavations conducted at Somerset Place in the 1980s and 1990s. The Zoom presentation was followed by a Q&A session.

Somerset Place, once one of the largest plantations in antebellum North Carolina and now a representative state historic site, is open to the public Tuesday - Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. It is our aim to offer visitors a comprehensive social history exploring the family life of all former plantation residents: the enslaved community, plantation owners, and hired white and Black employees.
