Armadi Tsayn (Արմատի Ձայն), which means “Sound of the Roots” in Armenian, is a contemporary folk ensemble from Boston, MA featuring oud player and composer Samuel Sjostedt, bassist Filippo Novi-Goller, and percussionist Alek Surenian. The group pays homage to the rich musical heritage of Western Armenia and the captivating sounds of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) - fusing traditional melodies and complex rhythms with influences from jazz, rock, and western classical music. Inspired by their mentors, such as Simon Shaheen, Ara Dinkjian, and John Berberian, they have packed theaters and clubs in Boston, New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington DC, Worcester, Toronto, and Yerevan, Armenia. In 2025, they released their debut EP “Armadi Tsayn” showcasing original compositions that weave ancestral roots and melodies with contemporary expression.
