In a recent discussion in the HWBG fora, we wondered how can we detect the rotation speed of cooling fans that didn't have a measurement pin. One suggested way was to mark one of the blades distinctively, and illuminate the running fan with a stroboscopic light. To this end, I'm testing here a concrete stroboscopic implementation which converts the audio signal from a frequency generation app into LED flashes.
As you can see in the video, it is actually much better to run the stroboscopy at 2× or 4× the actual rate of the rotation device, as this makes the marked part more visible.
Also, towards the end of the video, I'm experimenting with another idea - frequency analysis of the noise. It is obvious that this doesn't work well in my case and is unreliable/non-intuitive.
