Patient assessment and monitoring before a radiography procedure are crucial steps that ensure safety, diagnostic accuracy, and patient comfort. Radiographers are not only responsible for producing images but also for preparing and observing patients throughout the process.
🩺 Patient Assessment Before Radiography
Medical History Review
Check for allergies (especially to contrast media).
Identify chronic conditions (e.g., diabetes, kidney disease, asthma).
Note previous surgeries or implants (pacemakers, prosthetics).
Clinical Indications
Confirm the reason for the exam and ensure the correct body part/projection is requested.
Physical Condition
Assess mobility, ability to cooperate, and pain levels.
Identify wounds, dressings, or medical devices that may affect positioning.
Pregnancy Status
Always ask female patients of childbearing age about possible pregnancy to avoid unnecessary radiation exposure.
Psychological State
Evaluate anxiety, confusion, or fear. Provide reassurance and clear instructions.
👀 Monitoring During Radiography
Patient Positioning
Ensure correct alignment and comfort. Adjust supports and immobilization devices as needed.
Vital Signs (when indicated)
Monitor patients with serious conditions or those undergoing contrast studies.
Watch for signs of distress (shortness of breath, dizziness, pain).
Contrast Media Reactions
Observe for allergic reactions (rash, itching, difficulty breathing).
Be prepared to initiate emergency protocols if needed.
Radiation Safety
Confirm shielding is in place (lead aprons, thyroid collars).
Minimize exposure time and use ALARA principles.
