Also known as Barnes Level Crossing.
One of two level crossings within only 60 metres of each other, on the same road, Vine Road. Both crossings are near to Barnes station and junction, where two double-track lines split, one heading to Mortlake and Richmond, the other heading to Barnes Bridge, Chiswick, Brentford and Hounslow. It is one of five crossings in the London Borough of Richmond.
This crossing in particular is on the line heading to Barnes Bridge, Chiswick, Brentford and Hounslow. Both crossings are controlled and monitored via CCTV, with the old signal, redundant, British Rail signal box left abandoned in-between the two crossings. In addition to the old signal box, Vine Road recreation ground is also situated between the railway lines and two crossings.
The crossing on the line to Richmond usually sees more trains passing than the crossing on the line to Chiswick. It is common, however, for both crossings to be lowered at the same time. During the day of filming, there were South Western Railway trains being diverted through Barnes, although most of these trains were on the line heading to Mortlake and Richmond rather than Chiswick, Brentford and Hounslow.
