Multiple myeloma is a cancer of plasma cells in the bone marrow. A mutation in these cells causes uncontrolled proliferation, leading to multiple myeloma. Risk factors? Advancing age is a major factor, and it is more common in men. Insecticides also increase the risk.
Family history of myeloma or plasma cell disorders increases the risk. For diagnosis, we conduct tests like a complete blood count (may show anemia), kidney function test (elevated creatinine indicates kidney failure), and calcium test (hypercalcemia).
PET CT or MRI imaging reveals bone lesions or fractures. Then, bone marrow aspiration and biopsy show more than 10% plasma cells. Treatment depends on the patient’s age and fitness, and we classify patients as eligible or ineligible for autologous stem cell transplant.
Patients under 65 years old, in good health without diseases like heart disease or diabetes, receive chemotherapy and targeted therapy for four months, then high-dose chemotherapy and autologous stem cell transplant, followed by oral or injectable maintenance drugs.
In the 1990s, myeloma was a serious disease with poor prognosis. Now, we offer an average survival of 8-10 years for diagnosed patients.
