Good Night is the final track of the White Album, written by John for Julian.
Many attributed the song to Paul, who was known for showing more of a softer side when it came to songwriting, but as Paul said himself, this was all John :

"You could almost be forgiven for thinking 'Good Night' was mine, because it's so soft and melodic and so un-John. I believe John wrote this as a lullaby for Julian, and it was a very beautiful song that Ringo ended up singing to the accompaniment of a big string orchestra. I think John felt it might not be good for his image for him to sing it but it was fabulous to hear him do it, he sang it great. We heard him sing it in order to teach it to Ringo and he sang it very tenderly."

The band first brought Good Night in the studio on the 28th of June, with John on guitar and Ringo on vocals. A piano version was also recorded, available on Anthology 3    • Good Night (Rehearsal And Take 34)   . John eventually chose the final of his 5 guitar takes as a basic track, and he overdubbed two guitar tracks (one recorded at half-speed, which resulted in the part being an octave higher).

John, Paul and George added backing vocals to take 5 on July 2nd, along with a small shaker being played by George. This version, available here    • Good Night (Take 10 With A Guitar Part Fro...   , was eventually discarded in favor of a lush string arrangement written by George Martin.

July 22nd saw the final recording session for the song, with 12 takes of the orchestra being recorded, with Ringo singing the song live with the orchestra, though he would later rerecord the vocals later that evening. The Mike Sammes Singers, previously hired for I Am The Walrus, were brought back and recorded an equally lush choir arrangement for the song. One of the sopranos sang a high D note heard brightly in the introduction.

As mentioned previously, Ringo then re-recorded his lead vocals, and in the early morning of July 29th, Good Night was completed.
