Imagine playing the classic game of Battleship, but in real time with more realistic things going on. You can play Captain Sonar in two modes, turn-by-turn or simultaneous. For those new to the game I suggest the turn-by-turn mode until you are familiar and comfortable with the gameplay.

In Captain Sonar there are two teams. Each team controls one state of the art submarine. You are trying to locate an enemy submarine in order to take it out before they can do the same to you. Every role is critical. The action is non-stop and at times chaotic. As a Captain you must be organized and communicate well with your team, the Chief Mate, the Radio Operator, and the Engineer.

Teams sit on opposite sides of the table and are separated by a screen. Each team member takes a particular role on the submarine. The division of labor for these roles is dependent on the number of players in the game. There is the captain, who is responsible for moving the submarine and announcing some details of this movement. Another player is manning the sonar in order to listen to the opposing captain's orders and try to decipher where that sub might be in the water. A third player works in the munitions room to prepare torpedoes, mines, and other devices that will allow for combat.

Now you understand why turn-by-turn is suggested for new players. In simultaneous mode the gameplay looks like complete chaos. Playing Captain Sonar in simultaneous mode causes you to think and react quickly. There is a certain amount of anxiety as you are attempting to evade the other team while trying to locate and destroy them at the same time.

Captain Sonar is a great game to test your quick thinking and strategy. It has been a huge hit every time it gets demonstrated at Zia Comics.
