We “learn” the “rules” of the world when we’re young, then we spend the rest of our lives searching for evidence that what we’ve learned is correct. But sometimes it isn’t. Sometimes what we learn is unhelpful garbage and needs to be thrown in the trash.
We cling to our beliefs by distorting our thoughts. We twist and manipulate experiences using cognitive distortions like black and white thinking, personalization, and over generalization.
But we can challenge these distorted thoughts, and if we do that with consistency we can change our unhelpful beliefs.
